The Accelerate Pheno System is a single system that can achieve both rapid microbial identification of pathogens from positive blood cultures, as well as screen the identified pathogens against a panel of antibiotics. The identification is achieved through Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) within 90 minutes, and within 5 hours thereafter the system will have phenotypic evidence related to the antibiotic resistance of the identified pathogen. This is reported as Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) to grade the pathogen into “Resistant”, “Intermediate” or “Susceptible” for each antibiotic.
The system’s major advantage is that it reports on the real-time growth of the identified pathogens in the presence of the antibiotics, and thus reports on phenotypic evidence of resistance rather than merely the presence of a gene. This without the need for traditional culturing. The system has delivered significant improvements in cost of care, length of stay and patient outcomes in the various countries it has been successfully introduced to. The Pheno System and consumables have been approved by the FDA, CE IVD, as well as Saudi Food and Drug Authority.
